Attention to detail

I moved my butter knife gently and smoothly across the surface of the margarine. Once it was evenly coated with just the right amount to cover one slice, I spread it on the toast, not too thin, not too thick, ensuring all surfaces were completely and evenly covered and no margarine remained on my knife.

Anthony had long finished buttering his, left the steak knife he’d used sticking out of the margarine like a flag and had taken a bite.

My brother and I looked at each other, mouths open, not a word. I pressed my lips into a line that said it all:

I KNOW!

  • He doesn’t butter from corner to corner.
  • He used a steak knife.
  • He dug a chunk of margarine rather than slid across it.
  • He totally miscalculated the amount required.
  • He’s left serrated grooves in the margarine. And toast crumbs. (Gasp) And now the steak knife.”

This is the same brother that agrees sausages should have sides. To me they kinda do. Eight sides that need to be evenly cooked. And heaven forbid they sizzle into a curve and you can’t cook some of the sides.

Once I put my tongs down (for just a second) and Anthony stepped in to help turn the sausages by shaking the frying pan.

That’s like up-ending a game of Monopoly that your children have been playing for hours.

Anyway, I’m painting the picture. I think you’re starting to see how it looks.

If a job description asked for someone with ‘attention to detail’ and Anthony and I were both applying—they’d want to employ him and they’d offer him a different position.

Today we made salad sandwiches together at lunch time and I didn’t say a word as he went about slapping ingredients haphazardly onto the bread. There are steps involved in making a salad sandwich. They need to be followed.

  1. Meat first. Always.
  2. Tomato on the meat (stops the tomato making the bread soggy), followed by pepper (and salt if required).
  3. Next comes cucumber (the combo of 2. and 3. works in the middle of a sandwich as it does in a salad).
  4. Then it’s carrot and beetroot if you’re having it (only after the beetroot has been taken from between two sheets of absorbent paper).
  5. And finally lettuce (for two reasons, it’s hard to sit anything on top of the lettuce and it also acts as a barrier to protect the top slice of bread from the beetroot).

It’s quite simple and it makes perfect sense.

This is where things get hazy. What I call meticulous, he calls pedantic. What I call careless or sloppy, he calls toast. Or a salad sandwich.

Anthony likes to talk, but is not great on detail. I love detail, but I don’t like talking that much (poor Elsie got the combination of both; a love of talking and a love of detail so she can make one observation about something last the entire 15-minute journey into kinder).

We both found hilarious a comment by a comedian on TV last night. He said something like “No man has ever said to his wife, ‘Can you just go through that once more, this time in a bit more detail.’”

And today, as we celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary, we reminded ourselves of how we complement each other and of all the cool times we’ve shared.

Our happiness isn’t conditional on how he butters his toast (it is, however, on how he butters mine…).

  1. omg I am laughing!

    Thank goodness for husbands
    Thank goodness for brothers

(you and your brothers butter ‘thing’ reminded me that my brother and I had a late night wild turkey infused conversation recently about how bed linen can be too noisy and keep us awake….LOL)

      1. Really? Anthony would have totally agreed with you and your brother as you all sipped Wild Turkey. He says he’d rather sleep under newspaper than the new 1000-thread sheets. I don’t get that at all.

        Funny!

        And thank you.

I’ve been enjoying year 8, hope its just as fun for you two.
I think you need to start a blog just about crumbs in the margarine and butter! I HATE when Shane takes too much on his knife and then just blatantly WIPES IT BACK ONTO THE SIDE OF THE CONTAINER!!…..I’m cringing just thinking of it!! I on the other hand am perfect and never do anything disgusting 😉 HAHAHAHA

  2. Anthony = Shannon; you = me!
Darn those crumbs in the butter… Renders the butter useless for anything other than toast. Who want bread crumbs on their veggies or icing on a cake?
Happy anniversary x You two are just so gorgeous!

  3. Larissa, no wonder we are related!! Toast crumbs in the margarine, margarine in the honey…..so annoying!! And as for beds…..if Danny helps me put fresh sheets on the be, he gets very annoyed that I take the time to make sure the top sheet is up the right way so that when you turn the end of it down (near the pillows) you can’t see the stitching on the hem!

    1. Same!

I’m going to throw another one in too. How about peg location on a garment on clothesline – if something is going to have peg marks on it, they need to be perfectly situated on the side seams (or even under the arms of some garments).

      I’m not ashamed of it.

  5. Happy Anniversary, Larissa and Anthony! It was so lovely to catch up the other week. Although, had I known Anthony was so loose with a clothes peg and a butter knife, I’m not sure I could have spoken to him civilly ;-)Kate xo

  6. Happy anniversary to a couple who can laugh together! I cracked up out loud as I read it. I’ve recently ‘noticed’ some food rules of my own along with dishwasher packing rules and savoy eating (in even numbers) ones. After laughing at my husband for the last few years- I think I’ve come over to the dark side 😉
